They are probably trying to destroy competition for their young.

The person said that the non-broody hens are destroying the eggs. They lack maternal instincts so it's doubtful they're trying to reduce competition with their young because they'll never have any young the natural way.

I have a section on egg eating on my chicken page at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/chicken.htm that will give you some ideas.
Once a hen realizes how tasty eggs are, it's hard to breed the habit. Try putting some fake eggs in the nest. If all else fails, you'll have to separate the broody hen from the others if you want her to raise young in piece. A hen that eats eggs is more likely to also attack newborns. When my hen went broody, as soon as the chicks hatched, my other hen attacked so I had to build a quick separation in the cage with chicken wire. I hope things work out!

i didnt think chickens had maternal intstincts either!!! we will try putting the fake eggs in there. we are trying to cathc the eggs before they break them because we bought an incubator to hatxh them but by the time we get out there its to late. we are trying to figure out whenb she is laying.i think my husband accidentaly craxcked one that was buried up in the box and they found it and decided to bust all hers!! she lays pinkish ones so im not sure if they notice hers more or she is just not dominate enough to keep them from sdoing it.
