I have an opportunity to purchase some tropical lily seeds. I really like the color of the flower they produce - but I have no idea what you have to do to propagate them. And, how long it will take for the plant to germinate and grow into something that I can actually place in my pond.
Does anyone have any info on how to grow lilys from seed? :ph43r:
I've never done that myself nor have I really looked into it. I remember reading about manual fertilization of the flowers and then putting ziploc bags over the flower head once it sinks to collect the seeds. The seeds may germinate in shallow water just on the top (barely into) some clay dirt. I'm sure there are details somewhere on the internet on how to end up with a higher germination rate and survival. With lotus seeds, you have to knick them and can grow them out in little cups in an aquarium. You might try dixie cups of dirt with a little water over them under bright fluorescent grow lights indoors so that you can heat the water to over 80 degrees F as tropicals really need the heat.
