Hi

How the **** can i get rid of duckweed and stop it from returning??
It seems a never ending task netting it all the time.
Can i get some sort of 'weed killer' that i can add to the pond without harming other plants or fish etc?

Thanx
Micky

What kind of pond do you have? How big is it? Netting will reduce the duckweed. Chemicals exist that would certainly kill it but they would also kill the other plants and potentially harm the fish. What kind of fish do you have? Both goldfish and koi love to eat duckweed. I can't keep it in my pond as they scarf it up. Ducks and turtles also love to eat duckweed. Some other floating plants may be able to compete with the duckweed such as tropical salvinia, water hyacinth, water lettuce, etc. but they can also take over the surface. Finally, duckweed hates moving water so if you aim the outake of a pump over the surface to agitate it, that will help kill it off.

My pond is just a normal, all be it a funny shape, garden pond. Its max length is 12ft x 10ft wide and depths varying from 18" to 38" approx.
My fish variety consists of gudgeon, small koi + 1 @ 12" 1lb 8oz, small and large carp, golden orfe, shubunkins, goldfish, and small sarasa comets. Planting consists of 1 x medium size white lily, 1 x small yellow lily, yellow flag iris, canadian pond weed, plus a few bits and bobs cannot remember names of!!!
I must say that ive never noticed any of the fish eating the duckweed. Ive tried water lettuce and hyacinth in the past and the carp just eat them!
I may try the idea of moving water and add another pump.

Not sure of type of duckweed, but it consists of 2 leaves, in a figure of eight shape total length about 4/5mm, and a very fine root.

Thanx for the advice, very helpful.

Micky

It sounds like duckweed. I don't have a clue why your fish don't want to eat it. At least the duckweed keeps the algae from getting out of control. Adding more moving water should help reduce the duckweed.
