hello everyone, i just set up a 165 gallon pond in my yard and i am new to this so i was just curious as to how many fish i can put in it? i dont think i will be putting any koi in there as i read you need atleast 100 gal for every koi , but want to put some comets, Shabunkins and some tadpoles. thanks for your help!

I have a 19 gallon pond and i keep two goldfish in it. Therefore, you can keep 16 goldfish/shubunkins/tads in your pond.

Clutch7, Don't misunderstand the requirements for Koi. The first Koi requires 1,000 gallons, then it's 100 gallons per Koi after that.

Goldfish are a good choice. Just be careful, depending on where you are, some varities can't over-winter in the freezing. My experience is, chain Pet shops will sell you anything you're willing to buy. Be careful, I lost some beauties my first winter because of their poor advice.

I don't remember how many goldfish I started with, but what I can tell you is it wasn't long before they doubled in numbers. I'll never have to buy goldfish again. In fact I give them away.

I suggest starting with fewer than a dozen young goldfish as they can grow over a foot long and will spawn if everything's okay. The pond will do better if it's not overcrowded.

Johnny is right. A koi pond should be 1000+ gallons for the first koi and 100 gallons for each koi beyond that.
