I have a Plecostomus I have had for a few years lately I have noticed a cauliflower like growth on his mouth. Is there somekind of treatment? I sincerely hope so he has been with me a long time and I am quite fond of him. I do my water changes and frequently check all chemical levals in my tank so I think it may be genitic. If you have any questions pertaing to the following;
tank size (in gallons)
how long in operation?
total number, species and size of fish (or other aquatic life forms)
newest additions to the tank (including plants)
Temp.
Ph
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
kg/kh
type of filtration
aeration
water additives
let me know and will provide specifics.
There are many types of tumors and growths that can be found on fish. Some are caused by bacteria like
tuberculosis, some are caused by viruses like lymphocystis, some are caused by cancer, some are genetic
deformities, and some we'll never know! Lymphocystis is also called "cauliflower disease" so that may be what
your pleco has. According to The Manual of Fish Health, Pages 152-153:
"Tumours are caused by a variety of environmental factors, such as chemical pllution, and perhaps by certain
viral infections. Some tumours may be inherited from the parent fish. Lymphocystis is caused by a viral infection....
Lymphocystis caused raspberry or cauliflower-like growths on the skin and fins...The tumours of fish are rarely
very infectious, and in many instances, the factors responsible for their occurence are poorly understood. Fish
suffering from lymphocystis may transmit the disease to other fish via abrasions of the skin....It is rarely fatal,
being unsightly rather than highly pathogenic....There is no effective treatment for tumours or lymphocystis,
however, although some veterinarians may be willing to attempt surgical removal of external growths of badly
affected fish...."
It is probably columnaris. you can treet it with tmp sulfa, or sulfa 4 tmp, or parinox
I have a Plecostumous as well... and he's got a big white thing on his right fin as well as little ones all over his body.. I'm kinda freaked out.. Cuz i dunno what it is! Help me!
How big are the white things? Are they like cauliflower, salt, patchy white splotches, or fuzzy? Those would probably be in that order - lymphocystis, ick, columnaris, and fungus. Can you post a photo of the pleco?
