Title: Peeper Babies And Screening?
Description: Protection from predators

I'm working as fast as I can on the new pond for my new peepers but for now I built a mini pond with a black plastic bag and water from my fish pond...I even scraped the gunk off the side of the filter case to give them some green.

For now i am using aluminum screen to contain them. I havent observed them climbing it. I left the top covered while I'm at work.

Until my habitat is ready I would like to keep them in this breeding pond, if you will. It is 6'x6'.

My questions are:

I didn't want to keep them covered so I'm considering 2 other types of screen. 1) 1/4" holes thinking they can't get out but bugs can get in and a 1/2" hole screen which seems that they might be able to get out.

I was also considering using the soft window screen that I'm using now and encasing theit in the 1/2" metal screen, guessing that the frogs will not be able to climb soft screen but bugs can get in an hopefully birds can't. I would leave the top without the soft screen.

Some of these 30 tabs have bits of feet only and I want to give them a chance till they can move faster.

What method would you suggest?

Will they soon be able to climb a soft screen?

When they can jump it they are on their own ;)

Thanks

I chose this category because the question is about the Spring Peeper. Hope this was appropriate.

Newly morphed spring peepers might even be able to squish through 1/4" screen too! The window screen would keep them in. I'm not clear on how you say you're keeping them in but they can jump for it? So, there's a gap somewhere? That would also let in bugs. The new peepers can only eat really tiny animals anyway that could fit through small mesh. You could also add live wingless fruitflies, pinhead crickets, etc. to feed them once they come out of the water. Peepers can climb vertical surfaces so I'm sure vertical or horizontal window screen would be easy to climb.

Thanks,

I was figuring, If they could not climb screen then the only way out would be to jump for the larger holed 1/2" screen that I would lay on top in place of the mesh screen.

What can't they climb? I think I know the answer to that one.

Oh...the big pond is full to the brim. I added dechlorinater and plants.

Sorry, forgot to log in on the last post.

Tree frogs have suction cups on their feet so they can climb most anything. Spring peepers are a kind of tree frog.

lol, I had a feeling that was the answer. I read your site through and through very informative...maybe Teflon...

Thanks
