[FONT=Arial][SIZE=7][COLOR=red] Hi all I am new to this site and owning a pond . I have within days of filling it these large water beetles that apparently bite fish and us. How do I get rid of them.... Help Please.

Larger fish will eat the smaller beetles but you may not be able to buy a large orfe for example. If they're flying in from other areas, there's not much you can do except catch individual beetles. If they're breeding in your pond, adding most any fish will reduce their numbers as the fish will eat the newborn beetle larvae. The large adult water beetles can bite but probably won't unless directly bothered/handled. Newer ponds are more apt to have water beetles but I can't say for sure why. I think they prefer fishless ponds/waters. We used to get them in the pool but not since I've had ponds. I rarely see adult water beetles in my ponds anymore. I presume all the predators around eat them. Hopefully, as your pond ages, the beetles will also be less in number.

Thanks Robyn:
I caught one of the large ones today!! Haven't seen the other for a while. My son brought me three small koi fish last night . I wasn't sure I was ready but they seem to be doing fine..

So, you only had two beetles? That's not bad. Good luck with your koi!
