Title: Upside Down Tadpole
Description: prognosis

Hi there. I have a tadpole, leopard frog, I believe. We got it as an egg and it has done well for several weeks (about 12). Yesterday I found it floating upside down. I thought it was dead and perhaps it will soon be. It is still upside down, but is alive. I don't know if this is normal or if it is dying. My only thoughts are the water may be too warm (75-80 degrees F) I have only fed it the pellets that came with it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Chris

It does not sound good. He may yet recover though. How big is the tank? Does it have aeration and/or filtration? How much and how often do you change water? Do you add anything with the water changes? 80 degrees F is a bit warm for tadpoles for more than short periods. There may not be enough oxygen in the water. If you don't have aeration, add an air stone. You can also do water changes with cooler water. Have you tested the pH, ammonia, and nitrite levels? I can give you more ideas if you can answer my questions. Without knowing those answers, I would say to do a 50% water change with slightly cooler water, add dechlorinator and aquarium salt (a tablespoon per 5 gallons), and aerate the water well. Tadpoles can sometimes get fungal infections which may or may not have outward signs; often these are triggered by poor water quality. I hope the tadpole gets better!
