Yesterday early evening a box turtle (I think) was busy digging a hole next to a fence in my yard that was very moist from a dripping hose. The pizza delivery man discovered the turtle and thought it was trying to dig to get to the other side of the picket fence. He picked it up and it quickly withdrew to the safety of its shell. Later in the evening I checked on the turtle's activities and found her on the other side of the fence, in the same moist area, covering up a hole with her hind turtle feet (?? don't know much about turtles). After a little research I "think" I learned that turtles dig such holes to lay eggs and then don't return to care for them. They can be unearthed with a soft paintbrush and adopted for a more secure incubation period. I live on the coast of NC and am wondering it there are any turtle groups/clubs etc. that are interested in such activities. Thanks
It sounds like she was laying eggs. The eggs should not be disturbed unless they are likely to be damaged or destroyed by human or predator activities.
I found a sea turtle hospital in NC. I found this page on NC turtles (not a club):
