My friend and I found a approx 2 week old abandoned cottontail in AZ. We finally hit on a food routine that works, bitch's milk, tender new grass and carrot/greenbean baby food. This along with small amount of water thru a eyedropper seem to be doing the trick. The baby is gaining weight, strength and is very active. It loves to be held and sit on my shoulder as I work in my office. Question: How do we determine the sex? It seems very comfortable in a large birdcage with a stuffed toy to sleep under and enjoys frequent play time outside the cage. Suggestions on the care of this cutie?

To determine sex, it's always easier to have something to compare it to! Look at the genitals. Here is a basic drawing of the difference.

Boys have a larger space between penis and anus than females have between vagina and anus. In the females, the two openings are very close. The male's penile opening is circular while the female's vaginal opening is more of a v-slit. After a few months, the male's testicals will descend and then the male looks like:

Dea it is very hard to tell at this young age but Robyn is right about the sexing. Also if you have room in the cage you could put a small box or something in there for them to go into and put a piece of fleece or rag in it for them to curl up on or cozy under. Rabbits love nest boxes and in view of the fact that they are so young they will want this as they would have had with there mommy.
