Title: Can I Feed My Tiger Oscar Snails?
Description: too many snails in my new tank

I just received more fish and a 25 gallon fish tank. The fish in there are 2 pretscillas(spelling is wrong) and 1 neon. A couple wanted to start traveling and gave me their entire fish set up to continue taing care of for them. Well there are at least 30 tiny snails. Not even 1/2 an inch long. The couple said they came from a plant that they put in the tank and they could not get rid of them. I personally like snails, but not too many.

I have been feeding my Oscar cichlid staple food, hot dogs, and turkey. I would love to feed him some snails too. Can I do that? Will he eat the shell too?

(see what I ended up doing for my pleco in re: to feeding pleco algae from the pond)

Yes, you can try to feed snails to the oscar. Whether or not he figures how to open them is up to him. You can crush the snails (ew, poor snails!) if you want him to eat the insides easily.

I would not feed your oscar hot dogs or even turkey. Do you know the gross things they put in hot dogs? Beef heart is a better choice. You can buy it with the frozen fish food. Also, try some earthworms. How big is the oscar?

8 inches or maybe longer. Thats funny about the hot dogs because I don't even eat them. We really don't eat meat in this house lol.

At 8", he should be able to eat earthworms, crickets, mealworms, snails (either whole or busted), beef heart, fish, etc. I try to avoid hot dogs myself!

At the shop we try to feed our fish things they might normally find to eat in the wild.. We give the Oscars feeder fish, blood worms, yabbies, worms ( & flake foods ) etc & we did used to give them uncoloured Gold Fish altho we don't do that any more...
I've never given them hearts altho I have heard of other pet shops giving them live mice...
We've just sold our last Oscar & going to give them a rest for a while & make a Gourami tank instead...
I always say that it's a shame Oscars are what they are because they are a beautiful fish... We have had young kids wanting to buy Oscars from our shop which we explain to them that they need a huge tank to keep them & also that you can't really keep anything else with them ( altho I have a customer who swears black & blue she has Angel Fish in with hers - she says she feeds them like 50 mealworms a day & the Oscars are just too full to be interested in the Angel Fiah... ) Usually they are turned off buying them then so the young kids buy them from the other pet shop & then come to us asking for advice... It really annoys me actually & then we get people who have bought from us origonally & because we wern't open on Sunday they bought fish elsewhere only to have disease spread & kill the whole lot altho they now know to wait one more day & get them from us...
I am absolutely metticulous when it comes to our fish, if they are sick I won't sell them & I am as honest as I can be, if something shouldn't go with something & I know I'll say, if I don't know then I'll say so too...
I type too much - hehehhehe...
Oscars love eating snails - I see no problem at all feeding them snails !!.

By uncolored goldfish, do you mean the naturally colored ones (bronze/brown/blah) or something else?

When I worked at the fish store, boys would also buy small oscars only because they could watch them eat small fish. Most of those oscars never got decent care.
