Title: Feeding Mystery Snails..help!!!
SadieMay - August 21, 2006 12:36 AM (GMT)
I've put in some floating goldfish pellets, which it looks like the baby snails like. But what do I feed the BIG GUY!!! I'm afraid I might be starving him. I dropped in an algae pellet...he hasn't gone near that. We're not fresh green eaters here, so no lettuce. Somebody said something about treats of green peas. Can I do CAN green peas?? I have alot of veggies in cans. Tommorrow I go buy a vac and chemicals, the water chemistry is going bonkers. The ph is way too high. I did a 50% change on Sat., perked him up. AARRGGGGHHHH....don't want to lose him too.

Cooked frozen peas are better than canned. I suggest trying some cucumber. Cut a 4" piece and cut that in half. Use a grapefruit spoon to remove the seeds. Anchor the cucumber piece to the bottom if you can. He might also eat kale or leafy greens (not iceburg lettuce). He would probably go for peas. He should eat the algae tablet if he's hungry enough. How big is the tank? I suggest weekly 50% water changes. Snails will eat sinking fish foods like maybe shrimp pellets or something.

It's a 20 gal. tank...only has snails in it now. All the babies seem fine but the big guy is 'quiet'. I vac'd out the bottom of the tank this morning, Ammonia was in the danger zone. So in went all the chemicals...and some Tetra goldfish flakes. The flakes are starting to sink ( it's what they eat in the pond ). I'll let everything settle till I check it again tonight. So far the ph is way to high 8+. How do I bring that down, can I use the pond ph Down or do I need special aquarium size?

Not sure how true, but I've heard when feeding peas, you're supposed to remove the skin. i.e. between your finger and thumb, squeeze the insides out leaving the pea skin between your fingers.
Watermelon slices are also fun to feed the fish. I let them float. It's fun to watch the fish push them around.

I added about a 1/4 capful of ph Down, now just waiting for that to mix. Tommorrow I get to scoop out eggs. Noticed tonight a jelly mass on the hyacinth, guess what I brought in from the pond. :o Are pond snails predators? I realized tonight that I've been watching both mystery and pond babies scoot around. But there is ONE snail that's sorta attached himself to the Big Guy, just inside the edge of his shell. Have no clue how I'd yank him out anyway.

If they don't eat the flakes, the ammonia will continue to go up. What is the pH of the water from your tap? What's in the tank? Are there any rocks, etc. that could be raising the pH. Has the pH down worked? As long as you follow the dosage instructions, it should be okay. If worried, you can use half as much and check the pH an hour later.
It's a good idea to remove the pea skins when feeding goldfish as they tend to get them stuck in their throats. I don't know that it's necessary for larger koi that would swallow them whole or for snails that can chew through the skin.
You have apple/mystery and regular pond snails? They shouldn't harm each other.

ok, well that's kinda of a bummer that they won't harm each other. I was hoping the pond snails would be food for the mystery.lol I thought that they were attacking each other, now I realize I'm watching little orgies. ;)
Waters cleared up, I have aquarium gravel in the bottom. I had to buy a salad this morning just for the cucumber. Next store run I'll get some sinking shrimp food. New group of babies ( wrong kind!!!, missed that nest ). So far there's still alot of room so it doesn't matter, they're still pretty neat to watch. :D
