Title: Colorful Fish That Look Like Saltwater Fish?
Description: I want the look of a saltwater tank

I have been thinking about a saltwater tank for some time now. I have decided against it. I have heard many stories about salt getting into curtains and other strories. (I am not saying they are true or not) I would love the look of a saltwater tank without the salt if that makes sense. IF THIS IS POSSIBLE, What kind of freshwater fish should I look into? THANKS

The closest freshwater fish that seem more saltwater would probably be African cichlids for their range of colors. They also take rather barren setups with mostly rocks. The thing is, they need hard water. So, you would then have to worry about hard water stains instead of bad salt stains. I've not heard of saltwater aquariums causing problems aside from right around the tank. I've never had a saltwater tank or cichlids. You can put fake saltwater ornaments, fake algae, etc. in the tank to make a freshwater tank look more like a saltwater tank.

Yer definantly Cichlids - I just got some Leleupi's in ( & sold them today as well ) & they were quite colourful even at the small size they were...

I just googled African Cichlids, then clicked on "images" above it and saw the most beautiful African cichlids. There were yellows and blues and I have to get some! They do really look like saltwater fish. The only thing is I hardly see the colorful ones at thepet shops?

You will get a better variety at a store dedicated to fish instead of pets in general. Also, being in a store is stressful due to overcrowding, etc. so fish tend to not be at their best. A fish that looks boring at the store may color up in a nice setup at home. My local aquarium-only store has an entire bank of tanks of cichlids. Many are bright even at the store.
