Title: C-section Baby Guppys
Description: my miracles

fishkeepergod - September 19, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
My old female guppy has recently caught dropsy and as I can never treat the disease I decided to euthanase her, but she was heavily pregnant and I decided as she was due in only a few days I would deliver the babys via cesarian.
I gained a valuable look at how livebeares breed the hatch the 'eggs' inside their bodies the give birth,as when I cut my fish open they were all in their own egg.
The babys hatched on ther own though I sadly lost half, but I do have 20 healthy babys doing well.

Has anyone else thought of doing somethig simalar with dead or dying pregnant females so you can save the babys ?

I've not heard of someone doing that but it's certainly possible if the babies are full term. Are you sure she had dropsy? Such fish rarely are healthy enough to be carrying babies which is why I ask. I would have waited for her to birth before deciding her fate. I've never killed a fish myself. I hope the babies do okay.

I am pretty sure she was far fatter than usual and her scales were popping out she looked like a pineapple from above. She has had two previous litters with no problems, but this time she could not swim well and was swimming tail up alot and was breathing funny.
I did not want her to suffer any more than nessecery.

The babys are now nearly two days old and are fine.
