Yesterday morning i heard my blue heeler dogs throwing a fit and so we went out to see what the problem was and we got out just in timw to see a hawk carrying off my favorite little frizzled chick.we had put the chicks in my goat enclosure for the day since it was wamr to let them get some out time and this was in the middle of day so i didnt think we hadto worry with anything and 2 hawks came for lunch. we fortunately only lost one chick but could have lost more!! i didnt know hawks would come out in the middle of the day liek that. so we no longer are putting them in there. and we are missing "fuzz" now. he/she was so sweet!! :(

Hawks feed during the day. Years ago, my mother let our chickens out to play. I didn't want her to do it but she did. After about a week, the hawks killed the rooster who was trying to defend his favorite hen who was slashed badly. She was too fat to carry away and survived with stitches but another hen simply vanished. I think the hawks had chicks to feed. Our chickens now never leave their fully enclosed run.

Like Robyn said, I think it is best to keep them in a fully enclosed pen, they will have less room to rummage around but they will be safer.
