Title: Having A Pond

tankbuster - November 10, 2006 05:41 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I think i would like having a pond. However i feel rather silly just before the house there is a big river. I can just go before the house and watch the water flow into the river,go fishing or watch people doing nautic sports. In fact living before a river becomes something you can't live without over time.

If i was too live in a place where there is no water nearby like in a woody area. You know in the middle of a wood. Then i could see why i would build a big pond. To have the pleasure of watching fish swim and have like a little lake near the house. Of course i could no fish and enjoy notic sport in it but still i could justify having a pond.

Another issues is that we don't have a lot of land. I don't see where i could just put the pond

Also i live up north so i would have to bring the fish into the house for the winter and put them outside late in spring early summer. I do have a tank in the house but it'S used by big shark catfishs which are tropical.

A pond is somewhat different than a river because it's still, and you can control what animals and plants are in there. If you don't have room for a big pond, you could still set up a tub pond if you want. If you had room and built the pond deep enough, fish could probably overwinter outside. With a tub pond, it would be just for summer.

HI tankbuster

It sounds to me like you could have double the pleasure. You have the sound of a river close by and also you could have the pleasure of building your own pond. There's nothing like it.There is always room for a pond, big or small.
You say you live in the north.Where is north? If you make your pond deep enough you won't have to bring the fish in for the winter.

Hi,

Thank you all for your answers. I live up north in Quebec,Canada where we have temp in the winter of -30. The earth freeze sometimes up to 4 feet. So i would need a pond of 5 feet deep to have at least one feet of water that does not freeze.
The summer are quite short.

Well i did it i bought a common goldfish today in hope of building a pond next summer. I know they need 50 gallon of water each. I bought it now because it's a all white one which are rarer than the orange ones i see all the time. I've paid 0.66 cents + taxes for this fish. Also what kind of goldfish are the ones who are common complety white but are butterfly at the same time with blue spots here and there. Those are more expensive. They are not egg shaped they are like a common goldfish.

Hi tankbuster

I am so glad you decided to build a pond next summer.I am from Ontario and I know how short the summer is.I also know the -30 temp is in the winter.
I bought three goldfish about a month ago.A fantail red=2.99,oranda=5.99 and a fantail calico=3.49 and they are small. It sounds like you got a good deal on your fish.

The fish in the photo is called a shubunkin which is a calico goldfish with normal finnage.
