Title: Turtles I Bought In Korea
Description: What are these baby turtles?

Derek - November 26, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
Hi, I purchased some turtles in Korea (I'm teaching English in Seoul). I have some photos of them on my website: http://us.cyworld.com/derekteacher

I am trying to identify what these baby turtles are. At first, I thought they were sliders, but there is no red marking behind the eye. If they are not sliders, what are they, and how big will they get?

Thanks!

I think they are cooters or perhaps sliders but North American turtles nonetheless. I have a redbellied turtle (a species of cooter) who looks very similar. Do they have orange/red plastrons (bottom shells)? If so, that's what they are. If not, they may be another kind of cooter. Cooters grow large, over a foot long. Most turtles taken from the wild in the US are taken to Asia to be raised to be eaten. It's a crime. At least you rescued a few.

they look like they could be yellow belly sliders, or redbellied, hard to tell... or maybe a river cooter

They have yellow bottoms with some somewhat irregular patterns on the bottom. They might be cooters, which I see eat vegetable matter. They haven't been interested in much of anything I give them for food. I have seen them munching on some water plants I bought. They've been alive for over two weeks now without eating what I give them, so they must be eating something.

I feed my larger red slider in a separate tank, so I know they're not eating leftovers either.

Most baby turtles at first are only interested in very tiny live animals such as blackworms, mealworms, etc. Later, they will be more eager to eat fruits, vegetables, and pellets. My baby didn't seem to eat or gain weight for the first four months that I had him (he was a hatchling). Now, he's super pig!
