I have two new african dwarf frogs. The first few days they were acting normal and for the past four days they have been at the top of the tank completly out of the water. They will both do this for hours at a time. I will stick my hand in there and they will swim under the water, but come right back up. There is about a half an inch from the top of my 10 gallon tank to wear the water level starts. I am just wondering if this is normal or if they could be sick or something. One of the frogs has just shed his (or her I'm not sure) skin. I don't know if that is important to know or not.

My ADF's used to come up to the surface more when they were young. Breeding ADF's do so at the surface. It's fine for the frogs to hang at the surface or come out as long as they can't escape or dry out. Do you have plants or something floating on the surface that allows them to get out of the water or is it just their heads peaking out? I guess if the water quality were poor (low oxygen, high ammonia, poisons, etc.), then the ADF's would try to get out of the water so it would be hard to tell if that were the case, or they just wanted to get out.

Occasional shedding is perfectly normal. Usually they'll eat their shed skin but not always.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I do have plants that go to the top of the tank. One of the frogs didn't make it, but now the other one is back at the bottom of the tank and acting normal. Hopefully this one will make it. I am going to get a testing kit to make sure everything is alright with the water.

I'm sorry one died. Since you got them recently, hopefully he died of a problem he had before you got him that the other one doesn't have (we hope).

I have 2 ADF's in my 6 gallon Betta tank.I have floating plants and yes they both come and sit on the plants and poke there little heads out. They do this quite often so i feel that it is normal.(I think they just want to see what is going on with the bottom of the hood)
