Title: Live Bearing Guppies
Description: Birthing process

My female mom had 3 babies yesterday, seems still to be quite large, but stop birting today. What does that mean. Should I keep her in plastic birthing box. Is she thru having babies for a while or what? Thanks for your help.

I think putting guppies in a plastic box causes them a lot of stress. It may allow for more babies to survive but that can also be done by putting her in her own small tank with lots of plants in which the babies can hide. When I had guppies, I would just remove any babies I saw in the tank to another tank or net breeder to grow up. I'm sure many got eaten but I had too many as it was. A female guppy can birth over a few days, maybe as many as three days so she may still have some inside of her. They normally have more than three (assuming you didn't miss some that are hiding or were eaten), more like a dozen. If you put her into one of those plastic things that allows the babies to fall out of her reach but not end up back in the tank (some do), then you could potentially save more babies if she has some left to birth. It will, however, stress her quite a bit so she might dart around or even hurt herself. It seems that many female guppies die during or shortly after birthing as it's very stressful. Good luck with the three babies!

If you do put your guppy in a breeding trap dim the lights, I find it helps with the stress. A female guppy can have 30 young so she has a few to go !, She might bort her pregnancy if she is too stressed, and she may die as well but this is normal, most shop bought guppies are about 1.5 years old that is getting on in guppy years so just give her time and peace and she will do her thing .

She could have a lot more than that! I had one that birthed 50+ one day and two days later my other birthed 74. That was some sight watching them school on the bottom.

Wow I have never had that many ! I think my best is about 40 but usually mine only have that much befor they come out of birthing and start eating them.

I agree with what the others have said, having kept guppies for far longer than I wish to remember, I have long ago got rid of my breeding plastic thingy because my adult female usually died in it. Just make sure yo have plenty of plants for your babies to hide in and also make sure you dont have agressive fish and hopefully your babies will survive. However, don't hold your breath!!!!!!!!!
