Title: Salamandars Or Turtles
Description: Pond animals

Where can I find information about adding salamanders and/or turtles to my pond? I live in a zone 7, 10 degrees F. sometimes during the winter, but my pond doesn't freeze because of the large waterfall. It is very woodsy around the pond with very silty soil, so they can winter. My pond has turned into more for a pond for plants than for fish after the fiasco with all my Koi disappearing down the throat of a resident blue heron. I want to have a balanced pond, with a few comets in now and a couple of mosquito fish. I have about 2000 galloons, and 2 1/2 feet in the center. Any suggestions with animals that can live harmoniously with my lotus and lilies?

I have pages on both turtles and salamanders. The links are http://www.fishpondinfo.com/turtle.htm and http://www.fishpondinfo.com/saly.htm

Salamanders will only come in the late winter to breed and won't live at the pond most of the time. If you want turtles that stick around, you'll have to fence in the pond or otherwise create a large barrier to keep them in. My site has pages on all conceivable pond animals. You could add various tadpoles, snails (although some will eat a few of your lily leaves), native fish, microorganisms, etc. which are all in my ponds and covered on fishpondinfo.com. Have fun!
