Hi Robyn
I think I know now why I lost two males guppies in the tank.I found this morning that my black molly has eye cloud.I have the treatment here for it but I don't know if it will be ok to do the whole tank.I guess if one has it the rest well get it.I have 3 guppies that are going to have babies. Is it safe for me to treat the whole tank with them in there? I also have 2 plecos in the tank and will it be ok for them?I would like to get this cured as so as possible. Please let me know what I should do.I have removed all the baby guppies from the tank. They are in their own 5 gal tank.
Thanks swampview
Cloudy eyes can indicate bacterial infection, eye fungus, physical injury, cataracts, or eye parasites. The infection with bacteria is the most common. Some antibiotics are pretty safe for the animals you have (and good bacteria) such as erythromycin. Some aren't - penicillin kills all the good bacteria (and killed off my entire tank more than a decade ago, all but Plecy). Antifungal medications are more dangerous - for babies and the plecos. There's a natural antifungal - new PimaFix by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals which is similar in some ways to their MelaFix for bacteria. Cloudy eyes can be contagious depending on what causes it but when I've had fish with that problem (normally geriatric fish), it was usually just a fish or two and not the entire tank that was affected. It's up to you if you want to go all out for full strength antifungals and/or antibiotics or the more natural route (PimaFix, MelaFix, and/or salt). Some antifungals aren't very safe for plecos and fry. You only see cloudy eyes with one molly? How much salt do you add to the tank? Mollies like a lot of salt; they're almost brackish fish. Plecos don't like a lot of salt so you'd have to compromise or keep them separate.
