I bought a Trapdoor snail localy (only one of size they had) Something ate it I think but found 2 babies. I then ordered some from another source (all smaller) and as I feared my fish (goldfish one likes slugs above tube worms) attacked several on introduction and I saved some that remained. The two babies are doing fine but the new ones tend to lay on the bottom of the tank all day with the doors half closed. (they move some though) I also got two apple snails from my local source and the are doing well but I am keeping them in a tank as well. I was wanting to add them to my pond later to control alge. My question is should I dispose of the remaining trapdoors that came in by fed ex or wait it out and if wait it out is there are any tips to help them along to better health. I have been adding caned spinach to the tank to supplement the diet. Any ideas would be helpful. I think I have one or two still hiding in the pond as well as the sides shows signs of cleaning (what I bought them for) Thanks a lot.

I'm a little confused. You have some trapdoors in your pond and some in your tank? I would not dispose of any live snails. It may take time for them to recover. There are no real medications you can use to boost their health. Just providing a clean tank and good food will help. I think the spinach may foul the water some. Trapdoor snails are not big plant eaters which is one reason they are good for ponds. The apple snails on the other hand are usually good at eating plants. Try giving the tank trapdoor snails some sinking foods like those made for catfish (cories and plecos). As long as the traps are sealed tight, the snails are alive. If they are open a tiny bit, the snails may be scared or sick. If they are totally open or coming off, the snail may have died. This would be obvious after a few days as the innards often come out of the shell and stench starts to set in either way. I've gotten a lot of snails like you describe mail ordered, and I just put them in my pond. I find some live ones and empty shells throughout the year. I hope some do ok for you!

Thanks for the advice. I put the most (couldn't find all of them) the remaining trapdoors in the tank after I noticed the problem with my larger goldfish thinking of them as food along with two small goldfish (ones not going for the snails) along with some anarchis to set up a ballenced eco-system. The snails are not dead yet but as you said they seemed sick. The tank is one I put to use as a nursery for some plants and now smaller snails to get them upto a size suitable for my pond. The reason I asked about disposal was a concern about my healthy snails. The apple snails have been dealing with the spinach but I will try the other food you recomended. I think the big problem with the snails by fed-ex was shock of overnight travel. Thanks again I hope it helps.
