we have just replaced the light in our hood on the aquarium and with the last lot of eggs we had no light so there was no problem but i am wondering now if the light will damage the eggs in any way

If the eggs are close to the light, that could dry them out. I don't think the light itself will harm them, just mostly the heat. If the light produces UV radiation, that could harm the baby snails.
