Hi Norman,

I do not know the answer. Robyn has a snail page here somewhere, but I have been unable to locate it.
I am worried about my trapdoors because my pond is frozen over (except for the deicer) and it is only 20 inches deep.
She will be on later and help us I am sure.
Karen

My snail species page is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/snail2.htm

There are many species of ramshorn snails but I don't know all their exact names. There are larger ones that need heat and lots of ones that can take it down to freezing like black ramshorns and these little tiny ones I've had for years that came on some plants.

I assume your 150 gallon tank is to keep goldfish (or maybe other "feeder" fish) maybe to feed your axolotls? If so, adding snails can complicate things. For example, if you ever need to treat the fish for parasites and infections (like almost all feeder fish have), those treatments are not normally safe for snails (at least the parasitic "medications"). Also, snails will eat leftover fish food and algae but do not eat fish wastes. With a lot of feeder fish in there, I doubt there would be leftover food. Since feeder fish often are diseased, the snails might also serve as intermediate hosts for certain fish parasites. Those are just some things to consider. If you don't have any plants in the 150 gallon tank, you might put in a few apple snails. They like it over 70 degrees but don't die until down in the 50's. The trapdoor snails and ramshorn snails are more cold tolerant.

yea the 150 gallon water tank in basement is for feeder fish = goldfish and rosy reds. keep a light on the tank and want snails to help keep the algae down. i always tend to over filter my aquarium so their are extra clean. dont treat the tank in the basement at all. havent had any problems. heard of lot of people who clean their entire aquarium every so often. use good filtering system and change 1/3 of the water every week and water should be clean
