Title: Question On Fish Feeding

JGreen28 - February 20, 2007 09:55 PM (GMT)
hey i was wondering what i should do
i just got a new pearlscale goldfish but he doesn't seem to know/realize that i have fed him and does not eat the food. I know the food sinks to the bottem but i'm not positive if he eats the food or not. I know this type of fish can have digestive problems so i fed it a peeled pea just in case but that too sunk to the bottem and he hasn't touched it.
should i be concerned?

When you get a new fish, the fish is often stressed from the move and may also be scared and has to get used to everything before he/she feels safe enough to want to eat. I wouldn't worry if he's not eating yet. If after a week, there's no sign he's eating, then I would worry. Is this a new tank or one that already has fish? How big are the goldfish? How big is the tank? What kind of goldfish food are you feeding? Is it new?

its a new tank and he is the only fish. He a pearlscale goldfish and is pretty small, probably 1 inch or 1 1/2 inches. The tank is 2 1/2 gallon. I am feeding him TetraFin goldfish flakes and its not brand new but my dad bought it within the last month or two. He hasn't touched the pea on the bottem yet and it seems like he doesnt realize that i am trying to feed him.

The goldfish is very young. You should plan to buy him at least a 10 gallon tank in the future. I feed my goldfish Tetra flakes too so the food is probably ok. Hopefully, he's just taking time to get used to things. At only an inch long, he won't eat very much at all - maybe two of those flake pieces a day. Perhaps he ate a few when you weren't looking.
