Title: New 30 Gal Tank
Description: bowing of glass

rans0m00 - March 18, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
I just bought a 30 gal tank and i noticed when i put the lid on it didnt fit all the way in the middle there was a gap and so it had me wondering why so after looking it over i noticed in the middle it bows a little less than an 8th inch and so then it got me wondering if thats acceptable? Last thing I really want is all that water all over my floor, not to mention my fish also..... This might sound kinda stupid but i have been wondering for the longest what do my Cory Catfish eat? My gourami's eat about everything i put in for them so then whats left for the catfish?

Thanks,
Jon :ph43r:

My 40 gallon breeder tank bows almost 1/4 of an inch! It has me worried. I emptied it today and replaced it with my new 65 gallon. I'm worn out from that! I'm still going to use the 40 gallon tank for my turtle but only half full.

Mild bowing of the tank is okay. An eighth of an inch isn't bad. If it were more than that, I would ask the store. The glass itself can bow which could result in it failing, or it could be the frame that's not perfectly straight. To check that, you would have to have put the lid on the tank while empty to see if it were still bowed or not. If not, it would probably be the glass that bowed with water pressure. If it were bowed either way, it would probably be the frame that was not straight.

I'm a little scared of my 40 gallon tank and the new one too (it's so tall, and the silicon isn't even) as far as it failing. I've yet to have an aquarium shatter or leak in the 20 some years I've had tanks (most of those in the last 14 years).

Cory catfish are omnivores with a preference for animal-based foods. They'll eat fish food but really love small animals like blackworms, brine shrimp, and other small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, etc. Hopefully your gouramis miss some food. I put in sinking shrimp wafers and pellets for my cories at the same time that I put in flakes for the other fish.

I had been putting sinking shrimp pellets in there and they would disappear and then i would go to clean my tank and find what looks like almost all of them up under one of my plants..... and you told me they dont stash so i had to be over feeding..... i quit feeding my gouramis freeze dried brine shrimp at the same time i quit putting in the pellets..... Switched my gouramis to flake food since it seemed like an easier food to keep clean and not over feed... For about 10 days there has only been flake food going in... Of course the gouramis miss food but its more like specks so Im going to start putting the pellets back in.... is 2 pellets over feeding for 3 catfish that are about an inch a piece? and yes i bet you were worn out after the new tank... After the gravel is washed and moving it around and cleaning the tank just you name it... It wears me out and im young and in decent shape..... Maybe im also a sissy but who knows....

Yeah, they don't stash so there were more pellets than the fish wanted. A couple of shrimp pellets per day for 3 cories should be fine. I put in about that much, and I only had one cory in the 50 gallon. He joined his long lost breathren in my 20 gallon Saturday, and now they are inseperable.

I ache all over from bucket bailing. Because I wanted to save half the water so it was only like a 50% water change, I had to hand bail and fill buckets (old plastic buckets that I buy my cat litter in, don't know what I'd do without them, used over a dozen of them). I hand rinsed gravel from both tanks which does wonders for my hands.
