Title: Weird Pearlscale Behavior
Description: Fishies go to water's edge & smack lips

HChen - March 26, 2007 11:15 PM (GMT)
The last few days two of my three pearlscales have been going to the top of their tank and smcaking their lips at the water line. Sounds like they are gurgling water. Is this some tell tale sign of ill health, malcontent or just strange behavior? When I turn around to look they quickly dive to the bottom of the tank and then resume this when I walk away.

Have anyone experienced this with their fish? Do tell! Thanks.

That is a pretty common thing for goldfish to do. It may be nothing. They often do that to pick up foods floating around or to play with stuff on the surface. It can also indicate problems such as low oxygen, poor water quality, or illness. Just to be sure, you'll want good filtration and aeration. Also, do frequent water changes; I do 50% a week. Check your pH, ammonia, and nitrite to be sure they're ok. If you have good aeration and water quality, and they're otherwise healthy, I would just assume they're getting food up there or playing around.

Again, thanks for the input. Water tested fine and I did put in an air stone. I thought it might be an air issue. Never thought goldfish could take in oxygen outside of what's in the water. My 3 guys are such creatures of habit. Everytime I introduce a new element, a rock or a plant, or just move things around they have this worried look and swim up to me and hunndle around my hand. I never thought fish would be so sensitive until I bought my fellas!
I hope you got your 65 gal replacement!!!
