Title: Goldfish & Pleco Compatable Fish

Stacey - April 9, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded my 10 gallon tank that has 3 goldfish and Pleco (all under 3 inch size) to a 75 gallon and it is going great:) I love the way the fish act happier and the new light makes the golfish colors look awesome too.

My question is about compatable fish to add. Which ones can I add? My sister has mollies in with golfish and I like them but dont know much about mollies( neither does my sister) I was reading about shrimp (ghost or cherry) too and wonder if they would live or be dinner? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am new to all of this. Thanks so much :)Stacey

Goldfish can eat small fish as well as shrimp. The goldfish will definitely eat the shrimp as soon as they physically can. Cherry shrimp are really tiny and even small goldfish will eat them fast. Goldfish may eventually also eat smaller mollies. It is best to keep goldfish with just goldfish. Like you, I do have a pleco with my three boy fantails in there new 65 gallon tank. But, my pleco is 15" long, more than three times the size of the goldfish so he can't suck on them really as plecos are wont to do. When Plecy was a baby, he did suck on the goldfish I had back then. Anyway, if you aren't worried about some fish eventually "disappearing" into the goldfish, then fish like rosy red minnows, white cloud mountain minnows, platies, etc. are ok choices. Those fish are usually not going to bother the goldfish. Mollies may be a bit more nippy. You want to avoid fish that might pester the goldfish. Even your safest animal addition - more goldfish - has its risks such as introduction of disease/parasites or compatibility problems with goldfish pestering each other

I have two large plecos in with a medium boy fantail goldfish and one pleco does tend to have these fits of anger and has killed off six of my goldfish in the past.
But this is his temperment the othe pleco is fine completly docile.
As with the keeping with mollies I do and they get on well but seeing as you have three I would as only mollies over 1.5".
Mollies need salt in the water to get the best out of them and if you gradually add a little salt every week or so the gold fish wont mind too much either.
You want the dose of salt per gallon for mollies at half dose .I forget the dosage but it is something like 5g per gallon I would find out the proper measurements so as not to over salt.
Know your fish if your goldfish are agressive and chase after smaller fish don't put small fish in there, my goldfish is in with mollies, guppies and platies all of which were at least 1" long when they went in the tank but this mix is not recomended mine are just acustomed to a weird tank life !.
