Pete is Is very vain. I took this pic today and just had to share. Its hard to get a scale of things from the pic , but his fan tail is 8ft from out to out, and 6ft tall when it is straight up

Robyn - April 15, 2007 01:40 AM (GMT)
He's gorgeous, of course! Does he call a lot? The ones at the zoo that we've seen have a loud call that carries for almost a mile. Does Pete have a "girlfriend?" I'm trying to remember what you said about him before. Did you find him?

wayne r - April 15, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
Yes he just started calling again this week. Its a good thing the neighbours know I have him or they would be calling the police thinking someone was in distress.
He is still a bachelor. When he was on the loose he was spoted by the neigbour chasing a wild turkey. But at least it was a female turkey.
Last winter I brought him into the pond encloser so we could watch him through the house window, but I had to evict him as he was eating everything that was green. It was nice though having him so close to the house and pond. Ever night he would roost on top of the waterfall.

Robyn - April 15, 2007 05:29 PM (GMT)
That sounds neat - having a peacock living at your pond. Like most animals (including humans) though, he had to make a mess!

wayne r - April 15, 2007 09:23 PM (GMT)
I saw one thing that I am sure not too many people have seen, was a peacock swimming. As Pete flew across the pond the first time ,he thought he could land on the water. I thought I was going to have to perform a rescue but I was amazed when he casualy swam to the far end like a duck with a 4ft tail and steped out like it was normal. Wish I had a picture of that!
(Their pretty , Not smart)

Robyn - April 16, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
That must have been a sight!

Other than the big black square in the corner  , your peacock is totally beautiful.

EllenR - June 4, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
W O W Wayne....he is beautiful!!!!!!!

SpiffsPond - June 5, 2007 06:46 AM (GMT)
Incredible!!

And I thought the pheasants in our neighborhood were impressive! :D But a male peacock beats a male pheasant hands down.

wayne r - June 5, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
It would be neat if you could put cracked corn out for them to encourage them to hang around. How many is in the flock?

SpiffsPond - June 5, 2007 02:57 PM (GMT)
The last time I counted, there were two males and about 6 - 8 females!

While I love to see them, we haven't encouraged them to stay in our yard because we have a greyhound who might be TOO interested in them!!

jessw931 - June 7, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
do you have him caged?or does he roam

wayne r - June 7, 2007 10:31 PM (GMT)
Pete is in a cage that is a little bigger then recomended. It has a spot for him to get out of the wind and rain and has a 2ft X 3ft mirror that he will sit in front of and admire himself. I believe he thinks its another bird and finds that very comforting.
I would like him to run free but I am sure he would get killed by cars , dogs or cyotes. Was it you that said your neigbours peafowl visit your place.

jessw931 - June 8, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)
we have neighbors that have lost one or 2 from letting them roam, and unfortunatley my blue heeler is to blame for one. a male got in our yard while our heelers were out playing and the male came in our yard calling and my heeler didnt know what it was and attacked. we offered to replace him but our neighbors are real nice and knew it was an accident, my dogs dont bother ducks or chickens as we have them, but he had never saw a peacock in display ad yelling. how big is your cage?i would love to have one but didnt know how big of a cage to build

wayne r - June 8, 2007 11:39 PM (GMT)
Thats to bad. But I wouldn't blame the dog cause that is what they are is bird dogs.
That was an extremly nice guesture , to pay for the bird and nice of the neighbour to say no.
Petes cage is 12ft X 12ftX 7ft h.
If I can find a mate for him I will double the size.

jessw931 - June 9, 2007 05:30 PM (GMT)
yea my neighbors are real nice, and they know my dogs come out of the kennel when we are outside with them, but it was just one of thoose bad accidents.they know my dogs arent vicious we have chickens and ducks and pheasants and they can be with them no problem.does you male still call even tohugh he has no mate?

wayne r - June 9, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Yes , he has been calling more this year than last year. I was thinking of getting him a peahen just to shut him up. With my luck I would have two birds squacking.
He has also been displaying more.

wayne r - June 11, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
Sorry for the mistake on my 2nd to last post.
The blue heeler is not a bird dog it from the herding class. Right?

jessw931 - June 11, 2007 02:33 PM (GMT)
yea the heelers ar eherd dogs and that was what he was actually trying to do till the bird attacked back then he quit trying to herd.

does any one close to you have peacocks?maybe he hears one in the distance

Robyn - June 11, 2007 04:25 PM (GMT)
Wayne, I'm pretty sure he'll still be calling with a peahen. At our local zoo, there's a male peacock who's loose. He has a harem of peahens and yet was still calling his fool head off.

wayne r - June 11, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the warning Robyn.
Yes Jess a man about 1.5 miles away has several. That could be what is going on.
Plus two people have told me that they have seen them in the area running wild.

jessw931 - June 12, 2007 02:09 AM (GMT)
you may end up with a female!!he is probably trying to intice one to come live with him!! thats happpened to our neighbors they started with a male then a femalle from bout 2 miles away showed up now theyhave at last count 6 males 4 females androughly 13 babies.we are in peafowl heaven haha.i love watchingthem!! so you never know ole pete maybe be telling his woman that the grass is greeneron the other side!! and she packing her bags!

Wow awesome bird. I just saw some on tv some animal show where they removed them from a nursing home here in Florida .
Have you thought of a female so you have a pair? I know the females are drab but they have albino types to .

wayne r - July 18, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Hi Bianca
I am looking for a female. A white one would be realy cool.
Those must have been some old birds if they were in a nursing home. ha , just kidding.
I can guess why they removed them. Cause they are so noisy.

I know there are some great looking white ones at India's Sunderbans Wildlife Reserve.
However the problem is tigers there kill/eat people every year other than that should be fun looking for one heeheee.

All kidding aside I didn't know there were white ones thought only Albino ..
The ones removed from the Florida nursing home were removed due to the droppings and think one of the males was "aggressive."

I went to the feather site to put in a link for photos of peacocks which includes white ones. That link is

http://www.feathersite.com//Poultry/Peafowl/BRKPeafowl.html (be sure to click on the different varieties for more photos)

In the process, I found out that guinea hens can interbreed with both chickens and peafowl to give living birds! They are strange. Here's a link to photos of those birds:

Yes, I want a Guinea x Pea fowl. And the gorgeus white peacocks. I heard peahens don't like white peacocks.
