Hi there,
I recently unintentionally acquired snails in my aquarium tank. I am assuming that they came in from the weed i bought from the aquarium. Which is no problem, the problem is they appear to be breeding out of control!
It is a rather large tank, (4ft by 2ft) and i can pull out over 50 each week. I would be fine with having not so many in the tank, but they seem to be breeding non-stop.
Is there a way to control the breeding pattern, like lowering the temp? Or can i try to eliminate them all together?
The fish in the tank are redwing platys, blue platys, neon tetras, and another form of tetra (which i can't remember!) They also breed fantastically. It feels like every time i look in the tank there is another crop of baby fish!
Can anyone please help me on the snail issue?
Many Thanks
Rebecca
They are probably not mystery snails. Mystery snails are apple snails. They are big, over an inch across. They are male and female. They lay egg masses above the water line. They don't reproduce quickly. You probably have pond, ramshorn, or trumpet snails. You can try adding fish that eat snails. I don't recommend chemicals. I just live with my snails. I have more on controlling snails on my web site at
