In your opinion is it better to use an aerator or heater to overwinter a pond? My pond is 11'X15' and 28" at the deepest. I live in Zone 5 where it can get -10 degrees in winter. I'd rather use the aerator but wonder if it can really keep the pond open as needed. I am also thinking of builing a plastic dome over my pond to enjoy it over the winter. This should also help keep water temps higher. I'd be so upset to loose any of my loveable fish buddies
In my 1800 gallon pond, I leave the falls going and have a de-icer at the top of them. In my 153 gallon pond, I have a de-icer and aerator. So, I guess I'd suggest both! The de-icers sometimes stop working. At the same time, they are more able to keep a hole open when it's colder. If I could only have one, I would probably use the de-icer unless the pond really needed oxygen (overstocked, etc.). Actually, I'd find a way to use both!
