I found a red-spotted eft, and decided to do an "experiment" raising him. I tried to feed it thawed frozen blood worms, but I don't think it ate any. Sooo...
What should I do? I live in PA where insects are hard to find in the winter, and he's too small for most insects. Plus, I'm kinda... sensitive about feeding it live insects, or even killing insects for it to eat. What should I do?
Efts (the terrestrial portion of the life of a newt) will only eat small live animals. Even small efts can eat small crickets, mealworms, waxworms, blackworms, wingless fruit flies, etc. which are all sold at aquarium/pet stores. If you don't want to feed him live animals, then you should release him where you found him (which you really should do anyway). I wouldn't mind seeing some photos of the little guy though before you release him, if you do.
Yeah, he won't eat anything, and I was way too curious to see how these little guys live. Unfortunately I guess my little "experiment" or plan or whatever didn't work, lol. I'll try to take a few pics before I release him. :) The setup I had wasn't too spiffy, but I guess it was okay for a week of keeping him to observe. ^^
:D
