Is it possible to breed an eastern painted turtle with a western painted??
Yes. Where their populations naturally overlap, there is some interbreeding.
So I guess the same would go for in captivity. The reason I ask this is that Last march I found a painted turtle hatchling on the road, far from any pond. I took her home and my family fell in love with her. She's about 6 inches now and I was thinking it would be cool to breed her for the kids to see the eggs being hatched, and I already have people who would love to take a baby turtle or two home. When I went to the pet store to buy a male they said it's illegal for them to sell our native eastern painted turtle but he could order a western for me. The funny thing is he said if I was down south or on the west coast I could probably buy a eastern there. I guess it's okay to sell non native turtles but nobody wants to sell their own.
I don't know. The laws vary state to state. Some states are more strict than others about protecting native species.
