Title: Green Filamentous String Algae

Chris Haley - May 31, 2007 07:26 PM (GMT)
Can anybody tell me anything about this? Is it harmfull to a Three acre pond? Harmful to freshwater fish? How do we control it? Do we need to control it?

I know it's a lot, but I appreciate any help.

I'm short on time now. Have you seen my pond algae page at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/plants/algae2.htm ?

It's mostly a pain. It can clog up pump inlets, strangulate certain plants, and sometimes even animals can get stuck in it but that's an extreme situation. A little bit of string algae is fine. Unless you have a ton, you don't need to worry about it. You should however tend to the overall health of your 3 acre pond and include things like aeration, good bacteria, bales of barley straw, shade, plants, etc. as much as possible. My farm pond page is at http://www.fishpondinfo.com/farm.htm and it has links to sites that specialize in larger ponds including algae control and bulk amounts of chemicals (which I tend to avoid).

Good luck!

Chris, check out the products available at Aquacide Company. I've found their prices to be pretty good.

Ack! I just found some of this in my container pond! It must have come in with some of the other plants that we bought. I've been pulling it out whenever I see it now. But I guess that's easier for a 30 gallon container pond, than a 3 acre pond!!
