Title: Hosta
SadieMay - June 1, 2007 04:49 PM (GMT)
Has anyone actually put hosta IN their pond? Somebody on one of the yahoo fish sites mentioned it. They said put in only the all green, not the white/green types. Anyone else try this before?

Good question, Sadiemay! I'm hoping someone knows the answer.
I have tons in my flowerbeds needing thinned out. Would be cool if I can move some to the pond.

I've never tried it. I can barely keep the two I have in cages alive. Without a cage, the deer eat it. If I could grow one in the pond, that would be nice but hosta like the shade, and my pond's sunny.

As usual I jump in. ;) I found alittle tiny hosta ( green with a touch of gold ) under my pine tree. It's been there for at least 8 years and can still fit in you hand. So I dug it up and put it on the ledge in the waterfall. Man, did it perk up!!! There is some shade up there. I also moved 2 plantain lilies to cover the filter barrel. Robyn, rule of thumb with hostas is that the more white, the more shade. I've got them planted everywhere and anywhere. Actually I've got 2 very bushy green/white hostas with my tiger lilies and irises next to the edge of my VERY green pond at the moment ( no shade ). As long as they have alot of water they can grow pretty good and not burn.

Thanks for passing along that great tip SadieMay. Now I got a hosta in my pond also as an experiment. We can compare notes

I am glad that I came upon this thread. I have been afraid to add a hosta b/c I don't have any shade in my backyard except for the very late evening so maybe, now I will try a green one :)
Thanks for the thread!

Just an update, after a couple of days the little hosta is still doing good. My ph is running high ( nearer to high 8) but I think that's due more to all the algae. Trying to push hubby to fix the umbrella but it's not working. :( The plantain lily next to the filter box has gone totally upright, so I know it loves it's new spot. lol

excuse my ignorance, but what is plantain lily. could you post a picture?

As far as I know the biggest hosta is 'Sum and Circumstance', it's huge and all green and very sun tolerant ( no problem growing next to my concrete driveway in full sun). A plantain lily is another name for some species of hosta, it's usually referred to a more deep shade-needed and very much larger version of hosta. They have the same type of light lavendar to white flowers.

Is the hosta in the pond or at the edge??

My little green/gold is IN the water but the root ball is the only part that's underwater. The woman on the Yahoo site says she totally submerges her plants. She also said she's been submerging Peace Lilies for 4 years now.

Thank you. I now have another "to do" for the weekend on project "New Pond"

Ok I tried the hosta in the pond for 4 weeks and can see that it doesn't like it. It looked great for 3 weeks but now starting to yellow. Oh well its nice to experiment.

Mine is still doing good, perked up with quite a few extra leaves. Wayne, did you have a hosta with white in it? you're supposed to use the green ones.

doh. Back to the drawing board. I will try the all green one.

I put a green hosta in my pond a few weeks ago. 50-50 sun-shade. It's doing great, my root ball is about 2" below the water line, planted in pea gravel, no soil, and it's just recenty started to flower. The only problem is that on a couple of leaves the tips have started to whiten. It might be nothing, I post something if this starts to worsen. CF :ph43r:
