Title: Saltwater/freshwater Aquarium

Laura - June 2, 2007 09:52 PM (GMT)
I found a used 55 gallon aquarium for sale that I am thinking about buyiing for my goldfish. It was used previously for saltwater fish, and I was just wondering if that would make a difference. Would it be ok to convert a saltwater used aquarium into a freshwater aquarium??

Thanks

There may be some salt deposits on the tank. Rinse it a lot to try to get them off. A little bit of salt in with the goldfish won't harm them. In fact, I add a tablespoon per 5 gallons of salt to my freshwater aquariums. The salt stains though may be unsightly; only you would know since you've seen the tank. You can try to scrape them off with a razor blade if the deposits are thick. One good thing is that you probably don't need to sterilize the tank since the saltwater and freshwater parasites, bacteria, etc. are different and won't pose a problem if the tank still has something left from before.
