Title: New Pond Plants

Robbier123 - June 12, 2007 01:31 PM (GMT)
I have place an number of new plants in the pond this past week. I notice that a few continue to be blown over by just a little wind. I have tried to place larger rocks around the bases but that just doesn't seem to work. Any ideas here??

Thanks,

Rob

Som new plants do tend to be flimsy and weak. I've lost a lot of newly planted plants mostly due to raccoons and fish digging them up or squishing them.

If the plants are really weak, you might want to put them inside in an aquarium or indoor pond until they are stronger. They would need strong lighting though.

Otherwise, put the larger pea gravel around the base of the plant. Prop some plants up against other plants or use stakes to tie the new plants to for support.

What kinds of plants are falling over?

cat tails and Iris. the plants seem to want to float when placed in the water. I have put heavier stones on the top of the soil but still have the problem. Will take your advise and put them at the edge, near other plants and may also tie them together until they take hold better.

Ok, since they're taller plants (hopefully), you can stick a wooden stake in the pot and tie the leaves onto it for now. We have some bamboo poles I've broken up and used before. You can also try propping them against other plants, rocks, etc. With most newly potted aquatic plants, the original leaves are often damaged and/or die off quickly. The new growth should be strong if the plant recovers.

You can also try bare rooting them in pea gravel, with a layer of heavier rock on top. It works for me.
