i live in elizabeth city north carolina, and my husband found a little baby snake while cleaning the yard. the snake was hiding under a rock. he is about nine inches long. he is medium brown colored with a very light tan belly. the only marlings that is has is what looks like two lines going down the back of the snake. it kept wanting to relieve itself when i pinned its head down to pick it up. i dont know if that will help any, but i dont know. its eyes do not stick out, so im not sure if it is a copperhead or not. i dont want to kill it if it is a harmless snake. if anyone can tell what kind of snake it is i would really like it. thank you in advance for any help i can get.

I do not know what kind of snake it is, but I think you should put it back in the wild and let it be.
Most snakes aren't poisonous. To identify the snake, try
http://www.enature.com or
http://www.bio.davidson.edu/projects/herpc...kes/snakes.html which is just on snakes of NC. Both sites have photos for comparison.
I also found these neat table of snake colors matched to species. There are more than one that fit brown with tan belly.
