I work at a building in Alexandria, VA, and we have a patio with a pond out back. Last year, we had some frogs stop by and stay. This year there are two frogs, one a green/brown, fairly small, another a smaller frog with distinct markings. The smaller frog is green/brown also but has white rings around his/her mouth and eyes. We think both of these frogs are the "children" of a very large frog that settle in the pond last year - green/brown AND multi-colored AND had the white rings around his/her mouth and eyes. Sort of looks like an "Al Jolson" character..... Can anyone tell me what kind of frog this is with the white rings. I have looked through all kinds of frog pics and can't find a thing. We had goo-gobs of tadpoles last year and they were HUGE.... .like about 3-4 inches long.
Thanks
Margaret :D
Those frogs sound interesting. Is there any way you can get a photo? I've not heard of native US frogs having white rings or markings on them aside from white on the belly. Frogs often have a variety of markings that may not fit with their normal species markings.
The only US tadpoles that are going to be 3 or 4 inches long are bullfrogs. If these frogs are their offspring, then they must be uniquely colored bullfrogs, perhaps partial albinos. Bullfrogs are pretty aquatic so they're not too likely to spend a lot of time on a dry patio unless it's within a few feet of water.
