I found a huge, 16 gallon Rubbermaid round tub at Home Depot for beach parties. You know, the kind that you fill with ice and stick all your drinks in? They are about 5 dollars each. I used 5 gallon Ace hardware buckets for my Lotus, don't laugh!! They all grew and flowered beautifully, but I have read they need more space. They are all about 1-2 months old. I wanted to transplant them, but timing can mean a lot if a plant is fussy. Best to wait until they are dormant? Best to wait until they sprout again? Or now, as they are beginning to slow down with the drop in the evening temperatures?

Lotus are said to be best repotted in early spring, March in most places. So, it's when things thaw but there is no active growth yet. That's when I repot. Nonetheless, I've found when repotted lotus often die anyway. Now, if you just put the current 5 gallon clump of earth and lotus into a larger tub, it's not really a true repotting since you're not pulling and cutting tubers. That increase in pot size can probably be done at any time without much risk.
