Title: Strange Goldfish Parasite
Description: What is it?

Kathy sent me this photo.

She said the following:

"I picked this off the lower lip of my goldfish. Do you have any idea
what it is and how I rid the tank of them? It is about a 1/16th of
an inch long. whitish with two brown barb-like things."

My response:

"Actually, I'm not sure what it is. The larger parasites on goldfish include fish lice and fish leeches and anchor worm. This does not appear to be any of those. I don't see eyes on it. Can you see eyes or any other distinguishable parts to indicate it's an animal? The barbs could be something to hold down a small animal but some plants also have barbs. Is the goldfish in a tank or pond? Do you have plants? Did this thing move or do anything to provide further clues? I don't know what it is. I can post it in my forum or my web site and ask others what they think, and then let you know if I get a response, if you want."

Her response:

"Believe me, it is animal! It has a stomach and some type of whiskery mouthparts between the two barbs. Those barb things are hollow like a mosquito's sucking apparatus. Unfortunately, I am a botanist and not an entomologist and I was hoping someone out there had seen this before. The fish are in a small pond. Please post it maybe someone out there knows."

I don't have a clue. Do you?
