I have betta in my fish bowl and would like to put then in my 400 gallon pond. That's were the trouble starts because I dont know if they can survive in Maryland winters, even if I have a water defreezer.

Bettas are very tropical. They should always be kept above 70 degrees F and really like it 75-85 degrees F. They will certainly die once it goes down into the 60's degrees F. That means they can only live outside in MD for a few months during the heat of summer. Also, once in a pond, a betta would be easy for a predator to get since they're pretty slow. Other fish, frogs, etc. may also hassle a betta. I suggest buying the betta a nice 5 or 10 gallon tank with a heater. Good luck!
