Title: Floating Pond Plants
Description: roots disappearing on plants

:o I have floating water hyacinths. Their roots are suddenly being eaten either by my two goldfish or tads or the frogs. Don't know which? I have added some more of these plants. I'am in zone 6, do you think the will last the season or will the culprits kill the plants. I rely on them for shade on the pond certain times of the day, and it's really getting hot right now. Dont" understand why they would be eating them now as they hadnt bothered them early in the season. Any answers or suggestions may help.

Goldfish like to eat the roots of water hyacinth. It rarely kills the plants but it may make them grow/spread more slowly. As to why the fish might be eating them now and not before, your guess is as good as mine!

My fish tend to prefer the hyacinth roots over the lettuce. Hyacinth in my waterfall where there's no fish is beautiful green, and big; the hyacinth in my pond with the fish are is a yellowish green, I'm sure because the roots are being eaten. You might try lettuce.
