Fish feces with a lot of gas in them can indicate digestive problems. The fish may get gas in their system from bacteria in their gut that may overproduce if they are fed say rancid or poor quality food. They can also just be sick. Sometimes, there's not much reason for it. It's the same with humans in that regard; we have our good days and bad days digestively. Feeding the fish boiled, peeled peas sometimes helps with digestive problems.

boiled, peeled peas ....

why peeled. I have been feeding my fish (Koi and goldfish) peas with the peels and they LOVE the peels. Is there something wrong with feeding them the peels?

If your fish can handle the skin of the pea, that's fine. Some fish (mostly smaller ones) though will get intact peas stuck in their mouths. Without the skin, they're softer, and goldfish can usually smush and swallow them.

My goldfish & koi like peas a lot. I've never tried boiling them. I just get the frozen ones in the bag. Then soak them in some pond water for 15 or 20 minutes to thaw.

At first I tried just giving them the whole pea, but they seemed frustrated with the skin. They would end up spitting out the skin, and that part sinks to the bottom.
So, I started pealing the skin off. After that they just sucked 'em up whole ... or half.

Anyway, I've been feeding them peas about twice a month (during feeding season) for the last few years. :)

Is boiling necessary?

When I feed my fish frozen peas, I just soak them in warm water until they are soft, then give them a quick "squish" with my fingers to "break" the skin and then throw the whole bunch in.

shouldn't frozen peas be cooked? I usually nuke mine for a minute before feedling to the fishies.

The peas don't have to be actually cooked, just soft. Since fresh peas are normally hard, they are usually cooked before eating. Frozen peas may have ice damage that makes them more smushy when melted out.

I've never heard of giving lima beans to fish but I don't see why not, if they'll eat it.
