We just built a pond and added comet goldfish. One large fish is rolling and racing around. He flips and then lays on his side? This doesn't seem normal. He's been doing this for hours. Any clues?
It is not normal. How is he doing today? I call that fast moving all over spazing. That's not the technical term; I just made it up. When a fish spazes, it may mean there is something wrong with the water. For example, the pH could be too low or high or different from what the comet was used to. You should test your pond's pH, hardness, alkalinity, ammonia, and nitrite. The last two shouldn't yet be up there but sometimes tap water has them. Did you add dechlorinator to the water if you have city water? If not, the chlorine or chloramine in tap water can cause fish to spaz. Also, parasites can cause flashing (scraping on the bottom). I hope the problem is better now. How do the other fish behave?
He hasn't been jumping around for 2 days. The other fish are fine. We live in a very rural area in NC and are on a well so there is no chlorine in the water. I did the tests and they were all normal. Thanks for the input.
How long after you filled the pond did you add fish? I have well water too. Well water even more than city tap water is low in oxygen and high in compressed carbon dioxide. My well water is pH 6.5 from the tap. Once aerated, that goes to pH 7.5 as the carbon dioxide is driven off. If the fish were put into fresh well water, the low oxygen or low pH may have caused them to swim around crazily until the water was aerated.
