OK, so the guy in my local pet store sold me a baby Common Pleco without telling me how big it would grow (I'm sure not the first time this has happened). I was only keeping him with a couple of Betas in a 10G tank. He quickly outgrew that so I got a 20G tank. Well he is about a good 7" now and really makes a mess of the tank. I vacume the gravel every week and perform a 20-25% weekly water change and I still have a low PH reading. I eventually lost my 2 Betas, probably due to the amonia spikes, and now Mr. Pleco has the whole tank to himself. I really cant fit a bigger tank in my apartment, but I would also like to add some more fish to my aquarium. I guess my question is, is there any way I can keep my Pleco and add a couple more fish in this 20G tank? If so, any recomendations on what I can add? Is there any chance he will stop growing?
If it's a common sort of pleco, it will grow to 1 to 2 feet long. It won't stop growing until over a foot long, and then it just grows more slowly. I've had mine 12 years, and he's over 15" long. My page on plecos is at
http://www.fishpondinfo.com/pleco.htmI suggest weekly 50% water changes with gravel vacuuming. What are you feeding him? I've always had Plecy with other fish. He did well with zebra danios and white cloud mountain minnows for years. He's in a 65 gallon tank now with three goldfish who are too small for him to suck on. I suggest getting a few hardy small community fish if you want other fish in there with him. I wouldn't add any until you can get the ammonia to stay at zero.
Good luck!
