Title: Cattail

I have a cattail in a pot that's in the shallow bog/pool in one of the tiers of the waterfall. I'd say it's less than 8 inches from the surface. I know it'll freeze in the falls so I have to take it out. Can I drop the pot in the deep end and overwinter, or do I have to bring it into the house? First year for this kinda plant.

If it's a common cattail, they can actually freeze solid and survive. Cattails are hard to kill. You might experiment and leave a piece in the falls and sink the rest into the pond. I leave mine in the shallows which do sometimes ice down into the pots.

SadieMay,
I have cattails in my pond. I live in southwest TN. I leave mine in my pond year around...in probably 2 feet of water. This is the first year they got cattails on them. And they have multiplied!! I started with one plant, that was growing wild in a creek, and now have (after 1 1/2 years), I now have about 6 plants. Hope this helps you!!

That helped. I'll be pulling out the pot this fall and dropping it in the 2ft no freeze section then in the spring I'll be repotting. I noticed today I've got quite alot of peices I can repot off the main plant. If it survives this, , then I'll let it freeze up with half and sink with the other half on the 2nd winter.

Only 1 of my cattails iis in a pot. The rest are growing from the gravel on the bottom, I guess. Good luck with yours!!
