Hi Robyn: Thank you for a previous answer regarding toads in my lanai/pond. I think the problem is solved. Another issue that I am curious about. In the past year my 10 adult goldfish have spawned many times. I call the new ones pond babies. I am familiar with each and every one of them (about 20 in number). I have one that has been different since the day it swam to the top to feed. Couldn't tell if it was a fantail or comet. It is now about 2 inches long and solid orange. It has the short stubby body and bulging sides like a fantail and long flowing tail of a comet. It swims( waddles) just like the fantails, but doesn't have a fantail. I have fantails, comets and subunkins in my pond that are six-seven inches long. Is it possible that I have one that is a mix? Do fish only fertilize eggs of their own kind or is this one an exception? It is the only baby that looks like a fantail. The other fry were comets and subunkins. I have many beautiful calico colors and markings and some are solid. My pond /waterfall is 1500 gallons. I have a very happy pond indeed which has made me very happy, too. Thanks, Pat
Goldfish will all readily interbreed including commons, comets, shubunkins, fantails, and the even more fancy goldfish. It sounds like that one baby is half fantail and half comet or something.
I've got 2 of those, their mom is a fancy(with the tri-tail) called Potbelly. So far they're both very square shaped and colored yellow-gold with white. I've only named one 'Chunky Monkey'..after the ice cream I was eating at the time. I've got 4 babies named, just 11 more to go. :D
