Has anybody tried fresh water clams for biofiltration?

I've never tried them. I've heard they are hard to keep alive because they need a lot of algae and microorganisms in the water. My pond water is probably too clear to sustain them. Plus, clams can host certain fish parasites during part of their life cycles. Bitterlings are interesting freshwater fish that lay their eggs inside clams/mussels.
