Title: Stop Feeding ??

tara_g - September 18, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Hi,

I live in NJ and it has gotten cold - in the high 40s and fiftees at night. Should I stop feeding the fish in my pond when the temperature goes down ? also if it warms up should I start again ?

Thanks

The water temperature is more important than the air temperature. Also, it's important whether or not it will get warmer or colder in the immediate future. If the water temperature is above 55 degrees F, you can feed the fish. You may be able to feed as low as 50 degrees F if it's going to warm up in a few days. It's in the 50's at night here now too, and I'm still feeding twice a day. The pond temperatures is in the low 60's. The fish actually pack on more weight and eat more in September to fatten up for winter. It'll be a few more weeks before they eat less. I feed sporatically later in the fall and winter only during warm spells. If the temperature is supposed to really drop (below say 45 degrees F) and stay there, then don't feed too much even if the pond is still warm. It takes fish a few days to digest. The fish will also let you know how hungry they are; they will stop coming up when it's too cold.
